Karachi chief of Pakistan’s Jamaat-e Islami (JI) blames the previous government under the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) for turning a blind eye to crime in Lyari:

Jamaat-e Islami (JI) Karachi Chief Muhammad Hussain Mahenti has said that the previous government of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has converted the Lyari into Beirut.

[…]

Mahenti said that the PPP government has just provided lawlessness and killings to the Lyariites and always remain on lip service in order to restore peace in the area.

This is not the first time that Pakistan’s largest city has called Beirut. In 2011, Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that the media was over-exaggerating the crime level in the city of Karachi by portraying to be Beirut. A year before, a journalist warned that the political party Muttahida Qaumi Movement will “make Karachi worse than Beirut”.
